Ronelle Alexander

Ronelle Alexander is Distinguished Professor Emerita of Slavic Languages and Literatures at UC Berkeley, her area of expertise is Balkan Slavic (Bulgaria and the lands of former Yugoslavia). Prior to coming to Berkeley, she taught at UCLA. Alexander is the author of numerous books, and is a recipient both of a medal from the Bulgarian government and an honorary doctorate from Sofia University. She has traveled extensively in the Balkans in conjunction with her research interests in dialectology (the relations between different geographical varieties of speech), sociolinguistics (especially the relation between language and identity as connected with the breakup of Yugoslavia), and folklore (the language of South Slavic epic song).
