10 Armchair Travel Ideas for Shelter-in-Place Wanderlust

In an average year, the team at Cal Discoveries Travel regularly ventures to far-flung countries around the globe. With travel beyond our front doors on hold due to shelter-in-place orders, we’ve begun looking for ways to experience the outdoors and visit breathtaking places from the safety and comfort of our homes.

Here are 10 of the virtual travel opportunities we’ve taken advantage of in the past few months.

  1. imageVisit some of the world’s most famous landmarks.
Go on interactive online tours around the world. Enjoy 360-degree views of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France and CGI images recreating Stonehenge in Wiltshire, UK before you make your next stop anywhere from Jordan to Cambodia.

  2. imageEnjoy art at the Getty.
Missing their visitors, staff at the Getty Museum posted a challenge on social media to recreate famous art pieces using three household objects. The staff shared some of their favorites—side-by-side with the original works—online.

  3. imageTrek through the Selva Verde Rainforest Reserve in Costa Rica.
Naturalist guide Melany Ocón leads a tour showcasing the flora and fauna that make Selva Verde special.

  4. imageTour famous museums around the world.
Perfect for Cal Discoveries travelers and their young Golden Bears at home, these virtual museum tours allow visitors to enjoy art galleries and learn about history and science.

  5. imageExplore the hidden corners of US National Parks.
Fly above and through some of the less-traveled areas of five beautiful national parks around the country. Even travelers who have visited these parks before will have more to gain and explore from these videos.

  6. imageClick through an interactive UNESCO World Heritage Site Map.
Explore all the world heritage sites, both cultural and natural, throughout the world. From the Pyramids of Giza to the Great Barrier Reef, discover more about each site and view in-depth photographs.

  7. imagePeruse museums, zoos, and theme parks.
Plan an itinerary that begins at the Louvre, continues to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and ends at Florida’s Disney World.

  8. imageTake a virtual hike.
Stroll along a beach in Hawaii or venture down the abandoned Tunnel of Love in Ukraine. These stunning videos take you right along the paths you would walk in real life.

  9. imageCheck out some UC Berkeley Library Exhibits.
Almost every Cal grad regrets not taking greater advantage of the university’s extensive library services—and exhibits. Now, Golden Bears around the world can return to campus to revisit their old stomping grounds.

  10. imageTravel the world by train.
Instead of sitting in the plush seats of these trains while traveling around the globe, you can travel through Japan or Switzerland right from your own armchair.

Went on a virtual trip that’s not on this list? Let us know! Email caldiscoveries@alumni.berkeley.edu. We would love to share the ways you are seeing the world from the comfort of your home.
