Spring Newsletter 2017
Dear Cal Alumni and Friends,
Thank you for your interest in Cal Discoveries Travel. Every spring we prepare for our annual travel reception, which will be held Sunday, June 4 on campus at Alumni House, from 2:30–4:30 p.m. (details below). Part of our preparation involves getting all of the trips we are offering for 2018 online. We are also developing preliminary brochures for all the trips, as well as finalizing brochures for others. We are quite excited about our 2018 travel program.
One of the most important aspects of your trip is the pre-trip preparation. Once you select your destination and send in the reservation form, your pre-trip preparation begins. You receive a welcome packet full of details and instructions. Sometimes it is tempting to set this packet aside to “read later.” We recommend reading it as soon as you get it and then keeping it somewhere easy to access as you prepare further for your trip.
You may ask why you should travel with your alumni association. We think this opportunity provides lifelong learning with the world as your classroom. We often enhance the educational component of a trip by sending Cal faculty and other experts to provide lectures on the trip. Group travel takes the hassle out of trip planning so you can take advantage of destination knowledge, expert planning, and local connections. Plus, you enjoy an extra level of service, have the benefit of traveling with other Cal alums and friends of Cal, and often get to participate in experiences that could not be done on your own.
Many countries around the world require foreign visitors to obtain documentation to enter their country, such as a visa. In this newsletter, we cover an overview of the visa process and indicate which countries request US travelers obtain one prior to entry.
For those who have toured with Cal Discoveries Travel before, thank you for exploring the world with us and sharing the experience with your friends. If you haven’t yet been on one of our trips, give it a try! We think you’ll enjoy connecting with Cal alumni, as well as with Cal families and friends.
Our next newsletter will be published in August. Until then, look for our bi-weekly travel updates, follow us on Facebook, check out our website, or just pick up the phone and give us a call.

Americans Traveling Abroad
It seems that the world of travel is constantly changing and it's hard to keep up-to-date on rules and regulations of international travel. The state department website has great information for US citizens traveling to other countries, as well as what is required for travelers coming to the US.
Traveling abroad doesn't have to be confusing if you know the right things before you go. All travelers are required to have a valid passport to travel outside the United States. Certain countries require additional documentation for travel, such as a visa. On the state department website, you can search by country or browse the general FAQs to learn more about the destination you are visiting.
We always recommend researching on your own about the destination you are visiting. We, along with our tour operators, will send you detailed information about your trip, but there is always more information to be found. Whether you travel with Cal Discoveries or on your own, we encourage you to do your research, be prepared, and be informed about where you are visiting and what documents you'll need. We are always here to assist with any travel related questions so don't hesitate to reach out to us.

Southern Africa Odyssey 2017
Cal travelers accompanied by Dr. Steve Ruzin on our Southern Africa Odyssey trip pose in front of the uber-rare Welwitschia plant. The Welwitschia is found in the Namib Desert and features 'permanent leaves'—these leaves never shed! Their estimated lifespan is 400 to 1500 years.
