Dear Lair Campers,

After an extensive search, the Cal Alumni Association’s Board of Directors and I are proud to announce that Cathy Connelly has been named General Manager of the Lair of the Golden Bear, effective February 1, 2025!

Cathy has been an integral part of the Lair team for years, most recently serving as its interim general manager since March 2024. Her leadership, deep connections to the Lair community, and passion for delivering exceptional camper experiences make her the perfect person to guide us into the future.

A Lifelong Lair Camper

Cathy is a third-generation Lair camper with a family legacy that dates back to 1952 when her grandparents Nate and Rosalie Rubin first camped at the Lair. Cathy’s parents brought her and her brother, Bill, to the Lair as kids each summer, a tradition they now continue with their families.

About Cathy

Before stepping into the general manager role, Cathy served as the Lair’s senior director, Pinecrest operations, overseeing reservations, special groups, camper experience, marketing, and communications. Prior to her arrival at the Lair in 2008, Cathy was successful in growing national sales and developing new business partnerships in the gift and greeting card industry. She holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from California State University, Long Beach.

Looking Ahead

As general manager, Cathy is excited to lead the Lair into its next chapter, with plans to:

  • Enhance camper experiences with new programs and activities while preserving and enhancing beloved traditions.
  • Improve facilities and operations to make the Lair even more welcoming and sustainable.
  • Open the new Lodge and Dining Hall at Camp Oski, and expand on the Lair’s year-round programs and offerings.
  • Strengthen and expand our community and Cal connections to ensure the Lair remains a treasured destination for generations to come.

Notably, Cathy is the first woman to serve as general manager in the Lair’s 76-year history—a reflection of the evolving leadership of an institution that means so much to so many.

Cathy and her husband, Jon Spevack, look forward to welcoming both returning campers and new families this summer for another unforgettable season of friendship, fun, and Lair spirit.

Please join us in congratulating Cathy on this well-earned role. We can’t wait to see you at the Lair!

Go Bears! Go Lair!
