On Sunday, June 30, 2019, more than 600 Cal alumni, faculty, students, and friends joined together to march at the 49th annual San Francisco LGBTQ+ Pride Parade. The Cal Alumni Association (CAA) partnered with UC Berkeley’s Gender Equity Resource Center (GenEq) to lead the Cal contingent of marchers for the third year in a row. This special year also marked the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, a catalyst of the gay rights movement.
More than 500 members of the Cal contingent donned “Fiat Love” shirts to show their support for our LGBTQ+ community. Marchers began the celebration before the parade by making signs, dancing, and applying rainbow flag tattoos.
At the march, Berkeley spirit filled the air. Folks from GenEq and UC Rally Committee proudly led our contingent with a “California” banner. The Cal spirit quickly multiplied as an unplanned, yet perfectly choreographed dance routine broke out among members of Rally Comm and Cal Band when “Fight for California” began playing over our gold truck’s sound system.
Our contingent was a beautiful sea of blue, gold, and rainbow as Cal cheer cards were held up alongside rainbow flags to celebrate our wonderfully inclusive and diverse Cal community.
