Alumni welcome prospective students at virtual, chapter-led “Yield” events.

At the close of Alumni Week, newly admitted students from all over the country came together virtually through chapter-led Yield events. During Yield, the Berkeley community engages with newly admitted students and helps them feel welcome at Cal so that they can feel confident in choosing UC Berkeley. Students participate in lectures and panels and attend department-led information sessions.

Volunteer-led Alumni Chapters across the country brought our diverse Cal community together as alumni connected with prospective students, offering advice and reflecting on why they chose Cal.

Alumni engaged with students through breakout rooms, polls, chats, and Q&As, discussing all things Berkeley. The Rocky Mountain Golden Bears talked about life as an out-of-state student. One current student shared, “I attended an event like this two years ago, and it really helped me. I attended today to give back and hopefully make a difference for new, potential students.”

The Cal Alumni Club of Washington D.C., Cal Alumni Club of Philadelphia, and Motor City Bears welcomed students from the East Coast and Michigan. Chapter members welcomed students and hosted a panel with recent graduates, who shared their favorite Cal memories and college survival tips.

The Daily Californian Alumni Association members shared that being part of a student organization allowed them to find community at Cal. “Even if you don’t want a career in journalism, the Daily Cal is where you can find community at Cal,” said one chapter member. “It was a place where people really cared about what was going on, not just on campus, but in the world. That meant a lot to me.”

Members of the Cal Bears in the Desert, Black Alumni Association, Black Engineering and Science Alumni Club, Berkeley Chinese Alumni International Association, Native and Indigenous Alumni Chapter, and Cal Alumni Club of Los Angeles chapters created a space for diverse alumni and students to connect.

Eliosa Lopez-Valencia ’19 from the Cal Bears in the Desert chapter shared, “I enjoyed connecting with other alumni and realizing how many of us had similar experiences at Cal. Even though the event was virtual, I felt like I was at Alumni House surrounded by amazing individuals, and that brought me a lot of joy.”
