The Academic Council of Sofia University St Kliment Ohridski, Bulgaria
decided on Dec. 18, 2019 unanimously to award the honorary degree “Doctor
Honoris Causa” to Klaas Bergmann “for his outstanding contributions to
science and for his continuous commitment to the integration of Eastern
Europe to the European Research Area; and in particular, for his
collaboration with researchers from the Faculty of Physics”.

Because of the pandemic, the award ceremony was postponed until May 27, 2022. This is his second honoris-causa honor. The University of Latvia, Riga, awarded such a degree in 2005.

Klaas is a retired professor of Physics from the University of
Kaiserslautern/Germany. Since 2017 he works in industry (TOPTICA-Projects)
on the development of novel scheme of high accuracy laser ranging.
