Managing Editor (Berkeley, CA)

California magazine, the award-winning quarterly publication of the Cal Alumni Association, seeks an experienced, detail-driven and deadline-oriented production manager for our print and digital editions. The Managing Editor is a good communicator, strong leader, and effective problem-solver. They coordinate team members, deadlines, and processes to ensure the efficient flow of copy and assure the highest quality results. The Managing Editor will supervise fact-checking and copy-editing of the magazine, work closely with the editorial staff to meet all deadlines, while also managing ongoing relationships with freelancers, printers, and other outside collaborators. In addition, the Managing Editor works with the Editor in Chief to manage the magazine’s finances, monitoring monthly expenditures to meet net revenue goals.

COVID-19 temporary adjustments: Due to the current health situation related to COVID-19, the Cal Alumni Association and the University of California, Berkeley campus community are working remotely when possible, likely through 7/31/2021, to protect the health of our community. If needed, the Cal Alumni Association will provide the technology resources to perform the essential functions of this position remotely. However, please note that remote work must be performed in the state of California.

 
Responsibilities: 
  • Managing production schedule and copy flow for quarterly print publication

  • Managing relationships with freelance contributors, printers and other outside collaborators

  • Coordinating with and occasionally assisting senior online editor with creation and editing of digital assets (web pages, podcast transcripts, social media posts, etc.) 

  • Processing invoices, managing budget, and tracking monthly expenditures to meet net revenue goals

  • Participating in weekly editorial meetings

  • Coordinating all aspects of publication printing and distribution, including postage and mailing

  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications: 
  • 3+ years of production management experience

  • Fluency with the relevant editorial programs including Adobe InDesign, Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Word, Google docs, etc.

  • Ability to maintain budget and track expenditures 

  • Thorough knowledge of copy-editing, fact checking, and proofing standards

  • Good communicator and ability to connect with people at all levels

  • Deep familiarity with the printing industry and digital publication tools

  • Ability and willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends to support CAA and campus-wide events in addition to assigned work shift

  • Must submit to and pass driving record, consumer report, and FBI/DOB fingerprint background investigations

Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Familiarity with UC Berkeley 

  • Excellent writing ability 

  • Good editorial judgement

  • Experience working with HTML and at least one CMS

Salary and Benefits: 

This is a full-time position with a pay rate of $70,000-72,000 annualized and is located in Berkeley, CA. This job is eligible to participate in healthcare benefits, a retirement plan with company match, and generous vacation and holiday time off. CAA staff, while not University of California employees, are also eligible for many UC Berkeley staff programs and discounts on campus.
