Carol Liu, a former teacher, school administrator, and politician, served as a local city councilmember. She then served in the California State Assembly from 2000–2006 and in the state Senate from 2008–2016. Carol’s areas of focus in the state legislature included public education, services for the disadvantaged, poverty, other issues affecting women and children, criminal justice system reform, aging and long-term care, transportation, and environmental protection.
Carol chaired the Higher Education Committee in the Assembly and the Education Committee in the Senate. Carol is recognized nationally for her leadership and expertise in education policy. In the Assembly, she served as a member of the Blue Ribbon Commission on Higher Education and as a member of the National Commission on Accountability in Higher Education. As a senator, she has served on the Legislative Advisory Committee of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education.
Carol is passionate about public education, especially to the No. 1 public university—UC Berkeley—and has served as a trustee of the UC Berkeley Foundation board. She established an Education Chair at Berkeley, and she and her family have held football season tickets for close to 60 years! She is currently a member of the Charter Hill Society, California Competes, and her local chapter of Habitat for Humanity.
